HEY. WHERE IS MY SNOW DAY, WISCONSIN?

You know the hilarity of going to bed with your car coated in snow and waking up to it all melting?

Yeah.

I wonder how the weather people are feeling with egg on their face this morning?

eta: also, windows, you are such a piece of crap. Now I have to try to remember all the things I had OPEN. Bah.

Sigh.

When did my crushing on fictional redheaded women go from "Charmingly quirky" to "kinda creepy"?

Those of you who will say it's always been kinda creepy, go stand over there, I'll get to you later. ;p

Sort of. I'm not really expecting work to be off tomorrow. Sadly.

I am off to bed in a moment, but first, some femslash I've posted:

Two drabbles and an actual fic, hurrah.

Marple/Lemon: http://community.livejournal.com/femslash100/568776.html
Magnus/Marple: http://community.livejournal.com/femslash100/569261.html

Cadman/Teyla: http://community.livejournal.com/sg_rarepairings/82106.html (5000 words, actiony, not so porny)

Ugh. Bed. Where it is WARM. And my head won't hurt. Hopefully.

On the twelfth day of Christmas, norabombay sent to me...
Twelve board games drumming
Eleven comic books piping
Ten illinois a-leaping
Nine x-files dancing
Eight books a-milking
Seven dachshunds a-swimming
Six oasis a-laying
Five bi-i-i-ill hicks
Four robbie williams
Three britney spears
Two finn brothers
...and a britney in a fantasy.
Get your own Twelve Days:
</div I swear to you I did nothing but type in my user name. If only it pointed out the truth "a Britney in a fantasy perfume". Because of course, they flat out named the perfume what she was selling.

OH, Chicago Weather [Dec. 8th, 2009|10:39 pm]

norabombay
This morning, I took a look at the forecast. And I made the epic decision that I would be taking the bus to work. All day snowing, with even more in the late evening.

And not even snow, but really 35F weather, where it's just freezing rain, and you get ice all over the car.

Well, I left for work at 9. Wearing my weather appropriate outfit: Pants, leggings, one long sleeve tshirt, one polo shirt, and one cardigan. Topped with a pair of doc Maartins, knee socks, the mid weight coat (previously known as the heavy winter coat) two scarves, and gloves.

Spent the day working, and we had a meeting with our business partners- really with the company we are business married to. They were from Minneapolis and unfazed. I got a free trip to McCormick and Schmick out of it, which was nice.

But it meant that a 8:30 pm, I was having the joy of walking to the train in the sleet. Followed by the joy of waiting in the open station, and than the joy of waiting for the bus in this mess. Add in the two blocks from the bus stop.

THAN I got to spend 20 minutes cleaning off my car- which I didn't have the benefit of driving- so that I didn't wind up with a four inch layer of hard ice on it. You know how on Glee people are always having slushies and icees tossed on them?

That was me.

I was pretty much soaked. Iced and soaking wet.

And now everything is drying. Tomorrow I wear the parka, the other gloves and the other boots, and hope for the best.

I"m still trying to figure out how bad the weather was where people came from, because it's miserable here now, and I can't imagine it pre centeral heathing.

Annnnd I killed my computer [Dec. 8th, 2009|09:39 pm]
dawnkiller
Well, my work computer. Coworkers were having trouble with remote access, so on the advice of the IT guy I checked their connections (remote networking enabled, firewall set to provide exceptions), let the server install all pending updates, and restarted the Linksys router. Except after all that my own computer, which is the hub through which the printer is connected, is now exiled from the network. Winserver not responding, no Outlook connection, no synchronization, no printer (even though it reads as Ready in Printers and Faxes), no internet. Weirdly, my boss' computer seems fine, at least insofar as the internet was working for him. Of course, I noticed his desktop is where the Linksys icon lives, leading me to believe his machine is the original host. I still have no idea whether I succeeded in enabling remote access. I doubt it.

So yeah. Tomorrow I'll probably be at work sans internet, trying to figure out what the fuck happened. Since it was the server and router that were screwed with, I'm guessing the problem lies there. It would be awesome if I could just call the IT guy, but he's not on-site and the next time he gets called it has to be when the most hated coworker is around so he can get printing and other privilages enabled on his third laptop.

Tomorrow will suck.

One of the (probably many) things we did that drove my poor mother insane over the two week vacation was quoting 'Family Guy' endlessly. But probably the one thing that got done over and over again was Seth MacFarlane doing Gregory Peck auditioning for Transformers.

It's just beautiful.

Received Goods 8dec09 [Dec. 8th, 2009|07:09 pm]

warren_ellis

Oops, bit late with this, so I’m backdating it to before midnight, haha. Fuck the future.

tumblr_kp4agyC34P1qzq9yqo1_400

I came across this book a few months back, and was reminded of it yesterday. CYCLONOPEDIA: Complicity with Anonymous Materials, by Reza Negarestani. So I did a little look, and found the website. And, if the author will forgive me, here’s the entire, mental description of the book:

The Middle East is a sentient entity – it is alive!’ concludes renegade Iranian archeologist Dr. Hamid Parsani, before disappearing under mysterious circumstances. The disordered notes he leaves behind testify to an increasingly deranged preoccupation with oil as the ’lubricant’ of historical and political narratives.

An American woman arrives in Istanbul to meet a pseudonymous online acquaintance who never arrives. Discovering a strange manuscript in her hotel room, she follows up its cryptic clues only to discover more plot-holes, and begins to wonder whether her friend was a fictional quantity all along. Meanwhile, as the War on Terror escalates, the US is dragged into an asymmetrical engagement with occultures whose principles are ancient, obscure, and saturated in oil. It is as if war itself is feeding upon the warmachines, leveling cities into the desert, seducing the aggressors into the dark heart of oil …

At once a horror fiction, a work of speculative theology, an atlas of demonology, a political samizdat and a philosophic grimoire, Cyclonopedia is work of theory-fiction on the Middle East, where horror is restlessly heaped upon horror. Reza Negarestani bridges the appalling vistas of contemporary world politics and the War on Terror with the archeologies of the Middle East and the natural history of the Earth itself. Cyclonopedia is a middle-eastern Odyssey, populated by archeologists, jihadis, oil smugglers, Delta Force officers, heresiarchs, corpses of ancient gods and other puppets. The journey to the Underworld begins with petroleum basins and the rotting Sun, continuing along the tentacled pipelines of oil, and at last unfolding in the desert, where monotheism meets the Earth’s tarry dreams of insurrection against the Sun.

After reading that, I decided that I needed a copy — I mean, christ, wouldn’t you? — and it arrived today. I intend to get into this over Xmas, with a bottle of wine and Xela playing through noise-cancelling earbuds while my family spend a day trying to kill each other over possession of the tv remote.

I've posted the conclusion of Explosion of Skin (at last!), so go here to read it!

http://lynnlau.com/art/explosionofskin.php

I'm still doubtful of the ending I chose (which was totally different from the one I had in mind for the longest time), but, y' know, sometimes one can't wrap things up in little finite bows. So thanks for reading, guys, and I hope to be able to start churning out new comics for you soon!

Cookies, cookies [Dec. 8th, 2009|06:55 pm]

Wow! I have almost as much snow on my profile page as in my driveway. Ha. Was there some sort of special LJ day I missed? Many thanks, though, to all the sweet people who sent me something. Given how silent I've been of late, I'm surprised people remember I exist. LOL! My apologies for that, too. I have a lot of unanswered email. ;P

I've more or less removed most of the Twilight communities from my FList, if not all, and not the RPattz lists, either. I think my flirtation with Twilight has finally faded. How faded? I have yet to see New Moon in the theatres! Ironically, an interview with me is supposed to go up on a Twilight-related blog sometime soonish.

I remain more interested in HP. And thanks to Rozarka and JTav for alerting me to the lovely Cedric/Luna [info]smutty_claus piece. I'm SO spotty on LJ these days, and with all the holiday ficathons, please don't hesitate to let me know if you find any with Cedric! (I still monitor [info]twoseekers of course, so I see anything there.)

At some point, I WILL finish Dulce, but likely not until after the first of the year. It probably won't help, but I will say that I have about 8/10s of the next chapter written. It's just not finished or edited. I had a rather unexpected (RL) project fall in my lap, and now we get year-end finals, holidays, start-of-next semester AND a possible house move. So yeah. The good news (such as it is) ... there're really only about 3-4 chapters *left*, and that includes the one sitting unfinished on my computer.

The biggest news is just the snow outside. Ha. A projected 9 friggin' inches by the time it's done. I already cleaned the drive and sidewalks once, just to try to stay a little ahead. That was at 5-6 inches. So I'll likely have another 3-4 tomorrow. And it's supposed to BLOW tomorrow. 40 mph winds.

So that's my briefish update before I go to ground again reading grad papers and grading. I hope December is treating the rest of you well and if you're in the snow- or ice-belt, stay safe and warm.
